Frequently asked questions

Here are answers to some common questions about CSS Hat

Being a startup, of course there are some issues. But because we are a startup you can be sure that "working on it to fix it 24/7" is not just a catchy phrase, but our everyday reality. And one day, when you come back to this page, it will be filled with thank-yous for your patience.

I lost my download link. Can you resend it to me?

No problem, just insert your purchase e-mail here and we'll send it back to you right away.

What can CSS Hat do?

Hat works in Photoshop CS4 (or newer), and supports the following layer properties:

On the export side, CSS Hat outputs pure standards-based CSS3 (and also optionally vendor prefixed properties for all major browsers), LESS, SASS and Stylus. We even render gradients into SVG for Internet Explorer 9.

What's new in the latest version?

How can I get the latest update of CSS Hat?

Go to an update bar in your plugin inside Photoshop where you can download all updates directly.
CSS Hat update bar
Also, if you go to your download link, you will get the latest version.

I think that I'm not getting the latest updates.

This rarely happens in few installations of CSS Hat. The only solution is to download a new installer from your original download link.

I can't download CSS Hat anymore (my download has been blocked), what should I do?

It seems that you have downloaded CSS Hat too many times. Therefore we disabled further downloads in case your download link got into wrong hands. Please send us an email to support@csshat.com and we will reactivate it as soon as possible.

Installation of CSS Hat failed, I get 'Installation failed' error during the installation

We have few issues with permissions in Photoshop folder. We are working 24/7 to fix them. Meanwhile please use "or download zip for manual installation" link on your download page, it will work. Promise.

Manual Installation step-by-step tutorial:

  1. Copy 'csshat' folder into photoshop Plug-ins/Panels folder.
    • On Mac it is usually in /Applications/Adobe Photoshop (version)/Plug-ins/Panels
    • On Windows it should be in C:/Program Files/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop (version)/Plug-ins/Panels
  2. You will find CSS Hat Panel in Photoshop under Window > Extensions > CSS Hat
  3. Enjoy!
  4. Please report bugs to support@csshat.com

I need an invoice for my purchase

Please send us an email to support@csshat.com and we will send you an invoice.

Do I have to buy OS X and Windows version separately?

No, with purchase of CSS Hat you automatically get both.

I am having trouble installing CSS Hat in Photoshop CS4 on my Mac. No matter how many times I install it, nothing appears in Photoshop.

Solution no. 1:

Is there a CSS Hat folder in Photoshop/Plug-ins/Panels? If not, please try the manual installation.

Solution no. 2:

Please try to reset your workspace settings in Photoshop. This is a bug in really few installations of Photoshop. Basically it is like winning a lottery to get such a rare bug. Add it to your collection and impress friends next time they come over.

CSS Hat is slowing down my Photoshop

We are working hard on fixing this issue. In the meantime please just close the panel when you are not using it.

What platforms and Photoshop versions are supported?

CSS Hat supports Photoshop CS4 and higher (CS5, CS6) on Mac OS X 10.5 or above and on Windows XP or above. Also you might need your favourite web-coding tools, to get most bang for a buck out of your CSS code.

I want to see how it works before I buy

  1. Check out the video at the homepage.
  2. Download example kit.

I'd like to buy multiple licenses / I have special purchase requirements

Piece of cake! Email us and we will do whatever we can to help you!

What do I get for my money?

How can I open CSS Hat in Photoshop?

Open Window->Extension->CSS Hat in your Photoshop.

How accurate is the output?

For all use cases we encountered, CSS Hat's output looks just like the original.

However, no one is perfect and navigating through a maze of Photoshop's API is hard, so we'll be glad for any bug reports. Just drop us a mail!

I am a designer — what can I do to make my designs easier to code?

Please don't use blending modes - they are impossible to express in CSS. We know it is great to design with them, but when you finish designing, convert your work so that it would use just the normal mode.

Try to avoid bevel, emboss, satin and pattern overlays, as they are not yet supported.

Last but not least, please don't rasterize your layers — but you already know that :).

I want to have it ASAP!

That's not a question, but we'd love to answer anyway as buying CSS Hat is a matter of minute:

Click the buy button on our homepage, pay safely through PayPal.

After downloading, run the installer and start Photoshop.

Note: in some cases, CSS Hat doesn't open automatically — if this happen to you, just go to Window > Extensions and click CSS Hat.

Who is behind CSS Hat?

I have another question

Great! We love questions! support@csshat.com is waiting for you.

I would like to read more about LESSHat!

Awesome, you can read it from the oficcial LESSHat site.

CSS Hat gives me wrong font-sizes!

This usually occurs when you have wrongly set up units in Photoshop. To prevent this behavior, go directly to the Photoshop Preferences → Units & Rulers and change Type to pixels.
